Friday September 28 Las Vegas Nevada to Big Bear Lake California
This morning , we checked out of the hotel and met up with a couple of Skip's friends that would be joining us for the rest of the trip - Steve and Stacey. Skip is going to get them to take over running a couple of his tours . This couple were also riding a GS - not fair. I shouldn't complain as the Harley is quite comfortable for the type of travelling we have been doing of late.
Headed off to "The Omelette House " house for breakfast. I didn't actually have one but they would have to be the biggest omelettes I have ever seen . You could easily share one between 2 or you can ask for a baby omelette.
Now it was time for us to tackle the Mojave desert . What can I say - hot, hot, hot. The bike showed an air temperature of 108 F at its hottest . This is the desert that has the Joshua Trees. If you are a U2 fan , you would know they named an album after these tress. Apparently the woodpeckers set up homes in them and there are thousands of them.
Again this is part of Route 66 and we stopped at Roy's motel which for the most is abandoned but the service station still operates for the "tourists". Onto a bigger place called 29 Palms for lunch . Couldn't work out where all the traffic and people came from as there didn't seem to be much for people to do. Very strange to see so many houses just sitting out in the desert. No gardens or greenery around them at all.
After such a tough day , it was great to leave the desert and move up into the San Bernadino Mountains. As we rode up into them , the temperature dropped by about 18 degrees in matter of minutes . Bliss!
Big Bear Lake is a beautiful little resort town that services both summer and winter sports. Water sports and mountain biking in the summer and snow skiing in the winter. We stopped at the best Western , sat around the pool area and once again enjoyed some delivered pizza and red wine or drinks as a group under a beautiful sky and the smell of pines around you. I'm sure there are bears floating around.
