Tuesday 4 September
Another early start today as we don’t seem to be able to make it past about 6.00am so we are on the move by 7.30-8am. Another day full of the tourist stuff and ticking off the to-do list.
First up this morning was our trip to Alcatraz – the ferry takes you over and it’s a very steep climb ( again) to head up to the top of the island to have a look through the cell block. They give you a self guided audio tour to listen to as you wander around inside. Very foreboding despite the sunshine that streams in through the overhead windows. A tiny cell for many long term residents with access to a recreation area and a library to pass the years. Was very cold and windy despite being just on the end of summer. This was confusing as they provided us with fans before we got onto the island . Thought that was very strange till the flies started appearing when the temperature started to climb and I mean lots of flies.
Back to the mainland to have a look through the Exploratorium – best description is a very big Science works . We scored some free tickets so had a play for awhile.
Our bay cruise was next so cruised around the bay for an hour including going under the Golden Gate Bridge which was still in fog at 1.30pm. Not a great photo opportunity but we did our best.
San Fran has another bridge – the Bay Bridge – more impressive than the Golden gate but no one seems to mention it very often.
Finished the afternoon cruising around on the public transport which includes many trams which have come from all over the world including Melbourne. Public transport is excellent which makes it very easy to get around.
Russ has been keeping our step count on his phone and I think it was up around the 23,000 today so pretty easy to fall into bed every night.
